Living with thoughtful style: Introducing Margaret Howell & MHL.
Established in 1970, Margaret Howell clothing is celebrated for its quality, longevity, and understated design. Regularly named one of fashion media’s favorite designers amidst a sea of “young as hell” talent in London, Margaret Howell has spent the last 55 years honing a world focused on the quiet details.
We are so pleased to bring Margaret Howell’s two collections – her eponymous line, Margaret Howell and her workwear-inspired label, MHL. – to Maine. Read on to discover more about the brand and check out a few of our styling notes for this first delivery.
Margaret Howell is made for everyday life, embracing relaxed and subtle shapes. An emphasis on technique and craftsmanship from specialist manufacturers brings an unparalleled refinement to every garment.
“'I think of myself as a hands-on designer. For me, making is integral to my design philosophy. It is crucial how a piece of clothing feels when worn. I’ve always wanted clothes to be the way I drew them – relaxed and lived in, a natural look.” – MARGARET HOWELL
One Designer, Two Brands:
The MHL. label evolved from an appreciation for the functional details and durable fabrics of classic workwear. While the Margaret Howell collection is about refined detailing, MHL. pieces are designed to be tougher and more utilitarian. Together, these two brands reflect the essence of Margaret’s design ethos: a balance between sophistication and practicality.
“I’m inspired by the authenticity I can find in nature, people and places, and I think it is the same quality I look for in the materials I choose…I feel passionate about landscape, and its connection with such fabrics and the skilled people who weave them.” – MARGARET HOWELL

A Commitment to Craft:
Fully Fashioned Knitwear: The brand’s knitwear is not cut from a pattern but is shaped directly on the knitting machine, which significantly reduces waste. This technique ensures a superior fit and a seamless, long-lasting finish that feels comfortable against the skin.
Precision Shirts: Creating a Margaret Howell shirt is a two-person job. The cutter precisely cuts over 20 elements of the shirt, and the machinist constructs them. Their combined expertise is visible in the flawless matching of stripes and checks.
Finest Natural Materials: Margaret's commitment to working with the world's best natural fabrics remains a cornerstone of the brand. Many of their suppliers continue to use traditional hand-finishing techniques, bringing a human touch to every garment.
“I enjoy pulling these threads of British tradition, quality and skill together in clothes that are meant to be worn in the real world, where good design is about living with thoughtful style.” – MARGARET HOWELL
